When searching for the best extensions, registry Zodiac encountered the ICANN restriction that an extension cannot consist of a single character. .网 would have been perfect since "网" means 'website' or 'portal' in Chinese. Since this wasn't possible, Zodiac opted for the transcription 'wang'.
The advantage here is that the extension is open to anyone without a Chinese keyboard. A Chinese company targeting customers and suppliers outside China can thus manage a Chinese website that is easily accessible internationally.

The administrator of .wang, Zodiac Holdings Limited, was founded in 2008 by James Seng, an internet pioneer and one of the "inventors" of international domain names (IDNs). Zodiac was launched as part of the new gTLDs available from 2012. With 13 out of the 15 applied extensions being Chinese, Zodiac aims to put the Chinese internet world on the global map.
