About .eu-domain name
.eu is the top-level domain for the EU (European Union), the economic collaboration of European countries. With a .eu domain name, you can target an audience of 500 million people across 27 countries. Plus, the EU is one of the most significant economic partners worldwide.
A .eu domain name can be registered without restrictions by businesses and individuals located in any of the EU countries. Although the EU is not technically a country, .eu is officially classified as a ccTLD (country code Top-Level Domain).
History
The domain extension was launched on December 7, 2005, by EURid, a non-profit organization established by the domain registries of Belgium's .be, Italy's .it, and Sweden's .se. EURid still manages .eu today.
Right after the launch, .eu proved to meet a demand: within the first 4 hours, there were 700,000 registrations. Within the EU countries, it remains a very popular domain extension, often the second choice after the local ccTLD and .com.
Usage
.eu is an excellent extension to highlight the European character of a business or website. Many international companies active in Europe have both a .eu and a .com domain name. Sometimes, these different domain names point to the same website.
The .eu extension is also popular for websites associated with the Basque Country, as the Basque name for the Basque Country is Euskadi. Additionally, the extension is popular among Romanian, Portuguese, and Galician websites because 'eu' means 'I' in those languages.
