About .be-domain name
Usage
.be is the top-level domain for Belgium. For a small country like Belgium, it's quite a popular domain. For any business targeting the Belgian market, it's a great idea to register a .be domain name.
.be domains can be registered worldwide. About 20% of active .be domains are registered by Dutch registrars. However, the main audience for .be domains is the Belgian public. It's an audience you can best reach with your own .be domain.
History
For the general public, .be is a relatively young extension. It wasn't until 2000 that the domain was opened for registration. That year, the management of the domain was transferred to the non-profit organization DNS Belgium, after being managed by the Catholic University of Leuven since its launch in 1989.
In the last months of 2005, DNS offered a promotion where you could register a .be domain completely free of charge. This promotion doubled the number of registered .be domains.
In April 2009, the 900,000th .be domain name, https://artchaud.be, was registered by the artist Geert Opsomer.
In 2009, it was announced that the Flemish government has plans to start a three-letter extension specifically for Flanders. This extension will likely be .vla, .vln, or .fln. So, .be might soon have a little sibling.

Read the full articleWhat is a premium domain name?
A premium domain name is a domain name that is worth considerably more than a non-generic domain name. That's why it's called Premium. Premium domain names come in two variants:
- Domain names from older extensions with a very good generic name, such as auto.nl or candy.com, that have been registered for many years. Because these domain names have already built up a lot of 'value' and are very generic, they're worth much more money in a sale than a non-generic domain name.
- New gTLD domain names, involving a very generic name or company name that isn't registered yet but is expected to gain a lot of value. The registration price of these domain names can run up to several thousand euros. Examples of such premium domain names are gold.watch or healthy.club.
