The Norwegian top-level domain .no is managed by Norid, a subsidiary of the UNINETT Group. Norid is a non-profit organization regulated by the Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority. Norid also manages the top-level domains .bv (Bouvetøya) and .sj (Svalbard and Jan Mayen), which are not yet open for registration.
Strictly Regulated
The Norwegian .no extension has always been strictly regulated. The domain owner must reside in Norway, and the number of domain names is limited: initially 15, currently up to 100 domains. Individuals cannot register a .no domain but can register a .priv.no domain, of which they may own up to 5 names. Despite these regulations, the growth of .no domains has been steady since 2001, with an annual increase of 50,000 domains.
The restrictions are intended to protect the quality of the .no zone. Buying up large quantities of domains for legal or illegal purposes is not possible. In other countries, there is the issue of a domain being registered in the name of the registrar, leaving the user without rights in case of a conflict of interest. This is rarely the case with Norwegian domains.
International Domain Names (IDN)
Since 2004, Norway has supported the use of special characters in domain names, known as Internationalized Domain Names (IDN). Since their introduction, the share of IDNs has remained stable at about 4.5% of the total zone file. Most IDNs contain the most commonly used national characters æ, ø, and å.
