About .de-domain name
.de is the top-level domain for Germany, one of the Netherlands' key trading partners. It's the third most used TLD worldwide, following .com and .cn. Among the ccTLDs (country code top-level domains), it ranks second, right after .cn.
History
.de was launched in 1986. The first registration took place at the computer science department of the University of Dortmund. The abbreviation 'de' comes from the first two letters of 'Deutschland'.
In the '80s, Germany was still divided into the FRG and the GDR. There were plans for a separate domain extension for the GDR, namely .dd. After reunification in 1989, these plans were halted.
Administrator
.de is managed by DENIC. It can be registered by an owner or administrator with a valid postal address in Germany. Foreign parties can also register a .de domain, provided they have a contact person in Germany. mijn.host can assist if you don't have a contact yourself.
A .de domain name must contain at least 3 characters; exceptions include https://www.db.de, https://www.ix.de, and https://hq.de, which were already registered before this rule was introduced.
Other Uses
A small percentage of .de domain names are not used for German websites but for Spanish, French, Portuguese, or Romanian websites. In these languages, 'de' means 'of'. This makes .de interesting for online activities in those regions.

How do I transfer my .nl domain for free?
