Fixing bounce message "550 verification failed"

Are you trying to send an email and receiving a bounce email back stating the following:

550 Verification failed for <mijn@email.nl> Sender verify failed

In that case, the following situation likely applies to you:

  • You are using an external mail service for your domain name, such as Microsoft 365 or Google Mail
  • You are trying to email an email address that is located on the same server as your hosting package within mijn.host

Does the above not apply to you? Then please contact our customer service. If the above does apply, you can continue reading this article to solve this.

The problem is that it is not yet configured in DirectAdmin that your domain name uses an external mail service. You are therefore trying to send an email to another email address on the same server, but the mail server then indicates that this is not allowed, because you shouldn't be sending mail from an external mail service.

  1. To solve this, you first need to log into DirectAdmin.
  2. Next, navigate to E-mail Manager > MX Records
    Navigate to MX records
  3. Check if the correct domain name is displayed in the top right. This concerns the domain name from which you are trying to send mail.
Turn off the following checkbox: "Use this server to handle my e-mails. If not, change the MX records and uncheck this option."
    MX records in DirectAdmin
  4. Once you have unchecked this, click Save.

Was this option already unchecked, or are you not using an external mail service? Then please contact our customer service.
