How do I create a new instance?

In this article, we will go through the steps of how you can create an instance in your own Public Cloud environment.

  1. Log in to CloudStack in your Public Cloud environment
  2. Click the Create > Instance button at the top right

  3. Next, you go through the steps to create your own instance. In step 1, you can optionally specify a project, if you have created one. In step 2, you can choose the zone, which is the data center. Currently, only the Equinix AM6 (AMS-06) data center is supported.
  4. In step 3, you choose which operating system you want for your instance. You can choose from a list of operating systems that are available by default. If you want to install a different OS, this is also possible; you can upload it yourself under Images in the menu.
    In step 4, you choose the compute offering, this determines how many CPU cores and how much memory you want for your instance.
    Below that, you can specify the disk size for the root disk. This is 10GB by default, but you can increase it here.

  5. Optionally, you can configure a data disk in step 5. This is not the root disk, but an additional disk in your instance. You can also add this later.
    In step 6, you configure the network. If you select Public Network, your instance will get a public IPv4 and IPv6 address. You can leave the IP address input field empty, an IP address will be assigned automatically.

  6. It is recommended to set up an SSH key, you can first add this in the main menu under Compute > SSH key pairs. This allows you to connect directly via SSH to your instance. You can specify the SSH key in step 7.
    Under advanced mode in step 8, you can optionally specify cloud-init userdata.
    In step 9, you enter the name of your instance, this will also become the hostname within your instance.

  7. Once you have gone through all the steps, click on Launch instance
  8. Your instance will now be created and the root password will be displayed on the screen.
