What is registrar management ("forhandlerhåndtering") of .dk domains?

Registrar management means that an approved registrar manages your .dk domain on your behalf – renewals, payment, name servers and other changes. You remain the owner of the domain. Here we explain what it means in practice and why it is becoming mandatory.

How it has worked until now

Punktum dk (formerly DK Hostmaster) is the registry behind all .dk domains. Unlike most other country registries, Punktum dk has until now allowed domain owners to hold their domain directly with the registry – without a registrar in between. That meant two customer relationships: one with Punktum dk for the domain itself and one with a provider for website and email.

What is changing?

Punktum dk is phasing out the direct model and moving to registrar management – "forhandlerhåndtering" in Danish – for all .dk domains:

• From 1 July 2026, new .dk domains can only be registered through a registrar.
• By 30 June 2028, all existing domains held directly with Punktum dk must have chosen a registrar.
• From September 2026, Punktum dk is contacting domain owners directly and asking them to choose a registrar – first those with one domain, later those with several.

What does a registrar do?

A registrar is a company approved by Punktum dk. When your domain is under registrar management, the registrar takes care of:

• renewing the domain and collecting payment – you receive one invoice,
• changing name servers and other settings when you ask,
• helping you if problems arise with the domain.

Punktum dk requires that you personally approve the registrar taking on the administrative role. Nobody can move your domain without your consent.

What does not change?

• Your domain name – it is still yours, and you keep the right to use it.
• Your website and email – they continue without interruption.
• Name servers, DNS and DNSSEC – technical settings are not touched by the transfer.
• Your registration period – the time you have already paid for carries over to the registrar.
• Your freedom – you can switch registrar again later.

Why is Punktum dk doing this?

The model with direct registrants was unusual and caused recurring problems: forgotten renewals, domains expiring by mistake, and two different places to turn for help. With registrar management you have one customer relationship, one invoice and one place to get help. It is the model used by virtually every other domain extension.

What does it cost?
