What happens if you don't choose a registrar for your .dk domain?

If you hold a .dk domain directly with Punktum dk, you must choose a registrar before a fixed deadline. Many people ask what happens if they simply do nothing. Here is the answer.

The deadline is 30 June 2028

Punktum dk is ending direct administration of .dk domains. All existing domains held directly with Punktum dk must have chosen a registrar by 30 June 2028. Since 1 July 2026, new .dk domains can only be registered through a registrar.

What happens until the deadline?

Nothing dramatic. Your domain works as before, and you can still renew it with Punktum dk. But Punktum dk will keep contacting you with reminders to choose a registrar, and at some point you will have to decide.

What happens after the deadline?

After the deadline, Punktum dk no longer offers direct administration. A domain without a registrar can therefore no longer be handled the way it is today, and you ultimately risk losing the domain if it cannot be renewed. Exactly how Punktum dk will handle domains that have not chosen a registrar by the deadline is something Punktum dk communicates on an ongoing basis – but it is not a situation you should bet on.

Why you should choose now

• It takes five minutes. You choose a registrar in Punktum dk's self-service portal or give the registrar an authorisation code, and approve the transfer.
• There is no downside to doing it early. The period you have already paid for carries over to the registrar.
• It is easy to forget. A deadline two years away is exactly the kind of thing that gets forgotten until the website suddenly goes down.
• You can always switch again. The choice is not binding forever. If you are unhappy, you can move to another registrar later.

What changes once you have chosen?

Only the administration. Your website, email and DNS continue unchanged. From then on you receive one invoice from your registrar instead of from Punktum dk.
