Setting up Dynamic DNS (DDNS)

Do you have an internet connection at home or in the office with a changing (dynamic) IP address, but still want to be able to access your router, NAS, camera or server via a fixed domain name at all times? With Dynamic DNS (DDNS), your router automatically keeps an A record (IPv4) and/or AAAA record (AAAA, IPv6) of your domain name up to date, even if your IP address changes.

In this article, we explain how to:

  1. create a DDNS connection in your mijn.host control panel, and
  2. configure these details on your router. We will demonstrate this for the FRITZ!Box 5590 Fiber and the ZyXEL EX5601-T1 (the router/modem many Odido customers use).

What do you need?

  • A domain name that you manage at mijn.host, for which the DNS is managed by mijn.host (the mijn.host nameservers are active).
  • Access to the control panel.
  • Access to your router settings.
Note: Dynamic DNS is not available for domain names whose DNS is managed via our Cloudflare integration.

Step 1: Creating a DDNS connection in the control panel

  1. Log in to your control panel.
  2. Go to My domain names and click on the domain name you want to use.
  3. Click on DNS settings.
  4. Click the Dynamic DNS button at the bottom.
  5. You will now see an overview of your DDNS connections. Click on New credential.
  6. Fill in the details:
    1. Hostname: the subdomain name you want to update, for example home. The result will then be home.uw-domein.nl. Leave this field empty to update the main domain (uw-domein.nl) itself.
    2. Description (optional): a recognizable name, for example Router thuis.
    3. Records to update: choose whether you want to update the IPv4 (A-record), IPv6 (AAAA-record), or both. Do not enable IPv6 if your network does not support it.
  7. Click on Create.
  8. You will now see the username and, for one time only, the password and the update URL that you need on your router:
Important: The password is only shown once and cannot be requested again afterwards. Save it securely (for example in a password manager) or configure your router immediately. Did you lose the password? Click on the key icon next to the connection later to generate a new password.

The details you need to configure your router are:

Step 2: Configuring the details on your router

Almost every router uses the so-called dyndns2 protocol. In the DDNS settings of your router, therefore choose the provider "Aangepast", "Custom" or "dyndns2" and enter the details of mijn.host manually.

Below you will find the steps for two commonly used routers.

FRITZ!Box 5590 Fiber
  1. Open the FRITZ!Box interface via http://fritz.box and log in.
  2. Go to InternetPermit Access.
  3. Click on the DynDNS tab at the top.
  4. Check DynDNS enabled .
  5. Fill in the fields as follows:
    1. Update-URL: https://mijn.host/nic/update
    2. Domain name: e.g. home.your-domain.nl
    3. Username: the ddns_... username from the control panel
    4. Password: the password from the control panel
  6. Click on Apply to save.
Does your network only support IPv4 but you have enabled IPv6 in the credentials in the control panel? Then use the following as Update-URL:
https://mijn.host/nic/update?hostname=<domain>&myip=<ipaddr>

ZyXEL EX5601-T1 (e.g. Odido)
  1. Open the router interface (often via http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1) and log in.
  2. Go to Network Setting DNS.
  3. Go to the Dynamic DNS tab.
  4. Set Dynamic DNS to Enable.
  5. For Service Provider, choose the option DNS user defined.
  6. For Connection Type, choose the option HTTPS.
  7. Fill in the remaining fields as follows:
    1. URL update: https://mijn.host/nic/update
    2. Hostname: e.g. home.your-domain.nl
    3. Username: the ddns_... username from the control panel
    4. Password: the password from the control panel
  8. Turn on Use IPv6 to enable support for the AAAA record.
  9. Click on Apply to save.
The exact naming may vary slightly per firmware version. The steps remain largely the same.

Checking if it works

Shortly after your router has submitted the data, you will see the latest IP address and the time of the last update appear in the control panel next to your DDNS link.

You can also check if the correct A/AAAA record has been created under DNS settings for your domain name.


Troubleshooting

Not working immediately? The router usually shows a status message. The most important ones:

  • good – Success! The record has been updated to this IP address.
  • nochg – Also good: the IP address was already correct, nothing has been changed.
  • badauth – Incorrect username or password. Check the details or generate a new password via the key icon in the control panel.
  • notfqdn – The hostname is missing or incorrect. Check if you entered the full hostname (e.g., home.your-domain.com).
  • nohost – The hostname does not belong to this connection, the DNS is not managed by mijn.host, or the domain is on Cloudflare.
  • dnserr / 911 – Something went wrong on our end. Please try again later or contact us.
  • abuse – We use a rate limit of 1 update per minute. Please try again later.
