I received a verification email from ICANN, what should I do?
ICANN is a non-profit organization that oversees most gTLD (generic top-level domain) domain names. gTLD domain names are domain names that are not specifically configured for use in a particular country or region. Think of international domain names such as a .com, .net, .org, .info domain name, but also new gTLD domain names such as .site, .shop, .online and many more.
If you register a gTLD domain name, you may receive an email shortly after your registration to validate the email address of the domain name holder. This is because ICANN considers it important that the holder details are up-to-date and that the domain name holder uses a valid and validated email address. It is important to confirm your email address by clicking on the link in the verification email within 14 days.
The email looks like this.
In Dutch:
Geachte domeineigenaar,
http://icann-verification.registrar.eu/?email=..............................................
mijn.host
In English:
Dear domain name owner,
*Your action is required to prevent domain suspension*
This verification e-mail is triggered because your e-mail address is used in the owner contact of a domain registration and this e-mail address was not verified before or we have received information that this e-mail address might not be in use anymore.
The domain name registration policy of ICANN requires that a valid and working e-mail address is provided with each domain registration.
To verify this requirement, we kindly request you to confirm the accuracy of your e-mail address by clicking the link below:
http://icann-verification.registrar.eu/?email=..............................................
If you do not confirm the validity of your e-mail address by xxxx-xx-xx xx:xx:xx, domain name(s) associated with this e-mail address may be suspended and can only be re-activated once the verification is completed.
Thank you very much for your cooperation.
Kind regards,
mijn.host
When can I receive a verification email?
You can receive a verification email from ICANN at various times. Once the domain name profile has been validated, you do not need to do this again for every domain name. You will receive a new verification email in one of the following situations:
- Registration of an ICANN domain name with a new domain profile where the email address has not been previously validated.
- Transfer of an ICANN domain name with a new domain profile where the email address has not been previously validated.
- When changing/updating a domain name profile.
- When applying a new domain profile to an existing domain name. (Change of holder for your domain name.)
What happens if I do not confirm my email address?
>If you do not confirm the email address verification within 14 days, the domain names using this domain profile will be temporarily suspended by ICANN, meaning your domain name and email traffic from these domain names will temporarily no longer be accessible. You can resolve this by completing the verification. You can have the verification email resent via the control panel on mijn.host by managing your domain name. To do this, log in to your mijn.host account, then go to 'Domain names' and click on the relevant domain name. If the email address of this domain has not yet been validated, you will immediately see a notification at the top with a button to resend the validation email.
