Received an email from Punktum dk asking you to choose a registrar? Here's what it means

Punktum dk – the registry that manages all .dk domains – has started emailing domain owners with the subject line "Det er tid til at vælge din forhandler" ("It's time to choose your registrar"). If you have received this email, it is genuine, and it requires action from you. Here is a short explanation of what it means and what to do.

Why are you receiving the email?

Until now, you have been able to hold your .dk domain directly with Punktum dk (formerly DK Hostmaster). That option is being phased out. In future, every .dk domain must be managed by a registrar – Punktum dk calls it a "forhandler" – a company approved by Punktum dk to manage domains on behalf of their owners. This is known as registrar management ("forhandlerhåndtering").

Punktum dk is sending the email in batches. Owners with one .dk domain are contacted first; owners with several domains will be contacted later.

What changes – and what doesn't?

The most important thing first: you keep your domain. Your website and email addresses keep working exactly as before. The only thing that changes is who manages the domain:

• You will receive one invoice – from your registrar, no longer from Punktum dk.
• Renewals, name servers and other administrative changes go through your registrar.
• Your right to use the domain is unchanged, and you can switch registrar again later if you wish.

What do you need to do?

1. Choose a registrar. The email points you to the list of registrars in Punktum dk's self-service portal. Registrars you are already a customer of are shown at the top of the list.
2. Approve the transfer. Whichever registrar you choose, you must confirm the change yourself – either in Punktum dk's self-service portal or with the registrar.
3. That's it. The transfer is usually completed within a couple of days, and your domain keeps working throughout.

Is there a deadline?

Yes. Existing .dk domains held directly with Punktum dk must have chosen a registrar by 30 June 2028. So there is time, but Punktum dk will keep reminding you – and the sooner you choose, the smaller the risk of it being forgotten.

Is the email genuine?

Genuine emails from Punktum dk contain your user ID (Bruger-id) and the names of your domains, and they never ask for passwords or payment details. If in doubt, go directly to selvbetjening.punktum.dk instead of clicking links in the email.
