What are DNS templates and how do I use them?

A DNS template is a reusable set of DNS records. You create the records once (for example for Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or a fixed hosting environment) and then apply them to multiple domain names.

This is useful if you often need the same DNS settings, for example as a reseller or if you point many domains to the same service. When applied, the template is automatically filled in with the relevant domain name.

A DNS template is not the same as the DNS settings of a single domain name. You change those per domain via My domain names → [domain.nl] → DNS settings. See also: How do I change the DNS settings of my domain name?

Create a DNS template

1. Log in to the control panel.

2. Go via Domain names to My DNS templates.

3. Click New DNS template.

Template settings

• Template name: choose a recognisable name, for example Microsoft 365 or Standard website + mail. Maximum 150 characters.

• Use this profile automatically for new orders: turn this option on if this template should be applied by default to new registrations and transfers. You can only have one default template at a time.

Please note: when applying to a new domain name, records that are invalid or conflict with the zone (for example duplicate records for types where that is not allowed) are automatically skipped. The remaining records are still placed. After the order, check the domain’s DNS settings if you expect all records to be present.

Add DNS records

Under DNS records, add the records that should be in the template. Click Add new record for each extra row.

In the template you can use two variables. These are automatically replaced when the template is applied:

• %domain% — the full domain name, for example domain.nl

• %domain-dash% — the same name with dashes instead of dots, for example domain-nl

%domain-dash% is especially useful for Microsoft 365, for example:

%domain-dash%.mail.protection.outlook.com.

Example records:

• Name empty, type A, content 217.180.14.x → A record for the main domain

• Name www, type CNAME, content %domain% → www points to the main domain

• Name empty, type MX, priority 10, content mail.%domain%

Finally, click Save change.

Paste a zone file

Already have a complete zone file (for example from another provider)? Click Edit zone file, paste the zone and save. Use %domain% or @ as the apex (for example www.%domain%.). You do not need to include SOA records and apex NS records; those are managed automatically.

Use Back to table to switch back to the regular record table.

Edit, duplicate or delete a template

In the list on the left, click a template to open it. Via the menu (three dots) next to a template you can:

• Edit — change the name, default setting and records

• Duplicate — make a copy (the name gets the suffix (copy)). The copy is never automatically the default template.

• Delete — delete the template. Existing domains that previously received this template keep their current DNS records.

Use a DNS template when ordering

You can already choose a template before the domain is live. After the order, the records are then placed immediately.

When searching (a single domain)

1. Go to Domain names → Order domain name.

2. Search for the desired domain name(s).

3. Click Transfer/register and continue to the cart.

4. In the cart, click Edit contact details, nameservers and DNS next to the domain.

5. Under DNS → DNS Template you can select the template you created.

6. Click Save changes.

Default mijn.host template is the default DNS of mijn.host (matching our nameservers and any hosting). If you have set your own template as the default, that is used automatically for new orders, unless you choose a different template in the order.

When searching (via bulk order)

1. Go to Domain names → Order domain name and click Order multiple domains?.

2. Search for the desired domain name(s).

3. In the DNS template column, choose your template, or Default mijn.host template.

4. Click Add to cart.

Default mijn.host template is the default DNS of mijn.host (matching our nameservers and any hosting). If you have set your own template as the default, that is used automatically for new orders, unless you choose a different template in the order.

In the shopping cart

Is the domain already in your cart? Then you can still change the template:

1. Open the shopping cart.

2. In the cart, click Edit contact details, nameservers and DNS next to the domain.

3. Under DNS → DNS Template you can select the template you created.

4. Click Save changes.

Apply a DNS template to an existing domain

Do you already have the domain? Then you can still apply a template to the zone later.

1. Go to My domain names and open the domain name.

2. Click DNS settings.

3. At the bottom right, click Options → Apply DNS template to domain name.

4. Choose the template and click Apply.

5. Check the records in the table and click Save.

Please note: all existing DNS records in the table are overwritten by the template. Applying does not save yet; that only happens when you click Save.

Frequently asked questions

Does a template change the DNS of domains I ordered earlier?
No. A template does not automatically change existing zones. Only new orders (if the template is selected or set as the default) and domains on which you apply the template manually.

Do I need to add SOA or NS records to the template?
No. SOA and the apex nameservers are managed automatically. In a pasted zone file you can leave those lines out.

Why don’t I see all records from my template after ordering?
Invalid or conflicting records are skipped for a new domain name. Afterwards, open the domain’s DNS settings and add any missing records manually.
