And we see that there are actually just a handful of things that really matter in speeding up a WordPress site.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"this-is-how-you-make-your-wordpress-website-faster\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>This is how you make your WordPress website faster<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"1-choose-a-lightweight-wordpress-theme\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Choose a lightweight WordPress theme<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trying to make a WordPress website with a slow theme fast is almost always a lost cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sure, you can immerse yourself in hours of technical YouTube videos with a slow theme to speed things up, but believe us: it&#8217;s like building a house on a rotten foundation. Sooner or later, things will collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might wonder how to tell if a theme is slow? What is advisable is to always check a demo page of a theme through a speed tool such as PageSpeed Insights. That gives you a pretty good idea:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"987\" height=\"807\" sizes=\"(max-width: 987px) 100vw, 987px\" src=\"https:\/\/my.host\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pagespeed-thema.png\" alt=\"Google PageSpeed score of a WordPress theme. \" class=\"wp-image-1789\" srcset=\"https:\/\/my.host\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pagespeed-thema.png 987w, https:\/\/my.host\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pagespeed-thema-300x245.png 300w, https:\/\/my.host\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pagespeed-thema-768x628.png 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Keep in mind that a demo page does not yet include heavy plugins.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When choosing a theme, we usually recommend choosing one of the &#8220;proven&#8221; WordPress themes based on the Gutenberg editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples of such themes are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wordpress.org\/themes\/kadence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kadence<\/a> (extremely versatile and easy to use for beginners)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/themes\/generatepress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GeneratePress<\/a> (more suitable for people with a developer background)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wordpress.org\/themes\/blocksy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blocksy<\/a> (fresh looking theme that is easy to grasp)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news: these themes are all multifunctional (you can build any site you can think of with them) and also have a free version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this type of theme, you also don&#8217;t need a page builder like Elementor, which can also significantly slow down your site.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"2-use-the-right-caching-plugin\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Use (the right) caching plugin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A caching plugin stores a version of your web pages for future visitors. This means WordPress doesn&#8217;t have to generate the full page every time someone visits your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, a previously stored version (the cache) is served, leading to faster load times and less server strain. Especially during peak traffic times, this ensures your website continues to load quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you use web hosting that utilizes LiteSpeed servers (like we at <a href=\"https:\/\/my.host\/\">my.host<\/a>), then you can use the free <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/litespeed-cache\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LiteSpeed cache<\/a> plugin. Switch web hosts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your hosting provider also has a huge impact on your website&#8217;s speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, a lot of consolidation has taken place within the Dutch hosting world. At many providers that have been acquired, the focus on hardware innovation has decreased. This in turn has led to slower load times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you suspect that your hosting provider is the bottleneck in your website&#8217;s speed, it might be worth considering a switch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our <a href=\"https:\/\/my.host\/wordpress-hosting\/\">WordPress hosting services<\/a> are not a bad option to consider. For years, we&#8217;ve scored incredibly high in <a href=\"https:\/\/my.host\/blog\/getest-als-snelste-webhoster-van-2022\/\">independent hosting speed tests<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reason for this is simple: we not only invest in the fastest hardware that we manage ourselves, but we also work hard on optimizations focused on WordPress.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"4-use-a-cdn-if-you-have-many-international-visitors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Use a CDN (if you have many international visitors)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Content Delivery Network (CDN) works like a type of caching system in that it stores parts of your site on servers around the world. Visitors then see a version of your site that is located on the server closest to them, which benefits your load times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CDN&#8217;s add little value if your visitors come from just one country \u2013 in fact, your site could become slower than if you <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> use a CDN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, when your site attracts an international audience, a CDN is a <em>must<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are countless paid CDN&#8217;s, but for many websites, a free CDN from a provider like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudflare.com\/en-gb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cloudflare<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quic.cloud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">QUIC.cloud<\/a> is more than sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"5-remove-unnecessary-plugins\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Remove unnecessary plugins<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We sometimes come across websites that have dozens of plugins installed. And often some of these plugins even have overlapping functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure every plugin installed on your site serves a purpose. Optimize your images<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Images can take up a lot of space. A non-optimized image can quickly take up a few megabytes. This is deadly for your website&#8217;s load times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you use the aforementioned LiteSpeed Cache, you can automatically resize the images you add to your WordPress media library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also other plugins that can do this for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another option is to use a free service like <a href=\"https:\/\/tinypng.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TinyPNG<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-find-out-if-your-wordpress-website-is-slow\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to find out if your WordPress website is slow?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"feel-yourself-how-fast-your-website-loads\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#8220;Feel&#8221; yourself how fast your website loads<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the best ways to test your site&#8217;s speed is to put yourself in your visitors&#8217; shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open your site in an incognito browser tab on both your computer and your phone and click through about 10 pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are there hiccups, or do parts of your page load in an inelegant way? Then you have work to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"see-what-google-search-console-has-to-say\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>See what Google Search Console has to say<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a few years now, Google&#8217;s Core Web Vitals have been part of their ranking algorithm. Core Web Vitals is a set of statistics that measure the actual user experience in terms of loading performance, interactivity, and visual stability of the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see how your Core Web Vitals are doing in Google Search Console.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When everything is green, you have nothing to worry about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"926\" height=\"742\" sizes=\"(max-width: 926px) 100vw, 926px\" src=\"https:\/\/my.host\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/core-web-vitals.png\" alt=\"Core Web Vitals. \" class=\"wp-image-1794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/my.host\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/core-web-vitals.png 926w, https:\/\/my.host\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/core-web-vitals-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/my.host\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/core-web-vitals-768x615.png 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When URLs on your page are marked as &#8220;poor&#8221; or &#8220;need improvement,&#8221; however, you need to get to work.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure that you review your Core Web Vitals at least once every few months in Google Search Console. The fact that your pages pass Core Web Vitals at a certain moment doesn&#8217;t mean it will remain the same in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"use-a-speed-tool\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use a speed tool<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several speed tools you can use to measure the speed of your website&#8217;s pages. GTMetrix is a well-known example.
