If there were a significantly better alternative, I would not hesitate to switch – even if it would take me weeks to migrate all my websites.

Previously, there were already platforms like Wix, JouwWeb, and Squarespace and frameworks like Drupal to consider. Nowadays, there’s also a barrage of generative AI tools, such as Google’s Firebase.

I believe there’s a suitable use case for all these tools. Personally, I initially found Google’s Firebase to be downright spectacular. I even believed for a moment that many WordPress sites today could be made just as well with it, although I’ve since changed my mind (but that’s a topic for another blog article).

In any case, in this blog article, I will explain why WordPress will still be the best platform for most website owners in 2025.

The market share is gigantic (and why this is important)

WordPress runs on more than 43.5% of all websites worldwide. This means that of the 533 million websites using WordPress, millions of people work with it daily.

This is why this gigantic market share is so important for you:

A solution for everything

Looking for a specific feature? There is a 99% chance there’s a plugin for it. Reservation system, webshop, portfolio, membership site – thousands of free and paid options are available. Due to the large user base, there is literally someone who has built a solution for every problem.

A huge community ready to help with anything

Because so many people use it, the internet is full of free guides, YouTube tutorials, and forum discussions. You never really get stuck. Type your problem into Google or YouTube, and there is guaranteed to be a solution online.

Future-proof

A platform of this scale doesn’t just disappear. You’re not investing in a tool that won’t exist in two years. WordPress controls more than 61% of the CMS market – that’s dominant enough to stick around.

A user-friendly platform

WordPress is designed to be used by non-techies.

The basics – creating a page, writing a blog post, adding an image – is as simple as editing a Word document. The modern Block Editor (Gutenberg) works intuitively and visually. You click and drag elements into place.

People who still say that Gutenberg is an unusable mess probably haven’t used it since its launch. A lot has changed since then. The editor has become much more stable and user-friendly.

Yes, there is a learning curve, but you can grasp the fundamentals in an afternoon without seeing a single line of code.

The costs: WordPress is cheaper than all alternatives

Setting up a WordPress site is relatively cheap. Let’s compare that to the all-in-one platforms:

All-in-one platforms (Wix/Squarespace)

Wix: from €9 per month

Squarespace: from €14 per month

You pay a fixed, often high amount per month. If you stop paying, your site is gone. You rent the space.

WordPress

You pay for the individual components:

Hosting: €2-10 per month (even for sites with thousands of visitors per month, this is usually sufficient)

Domain name: from €4.99 per year

Theme/Plugins: Many are free. Most premium themes have an excellent free version (like Kadence and Blocksy)

In the long run, you are almost always cheaper with WordPress. And most importantly: the site is truly yours.

Full control and ownership

Even if you pay an agency to build the site, the end product remains yours. This has tangible benefits:

Independence

You are the owner. You can move your site to another host whenever you want. You are not trapped in the “golden cage” of an all-in-one platform.

Easy adjustments

Modify a text, upload a new team photo, publish a blog post… You can do all this yourself without getting an invoice for every small adjustment from your web developer. You are the boss of your own content.

The downsides of WordPress

No platform is perfect. Developers often have (justified) criticism of the technical side of WordPress. Let’s discuss the most common complaints and explain why they are usually not that important to you as a user.

Downside 1: “The technology is outdated”

The problem for developers: WordPress deliberately supports older versions of the PHP programming language, missing out on more modern, faster code. Developers find the codebase “ugly” and not elegant because of this.

Why it doesn’t matter to you: You work in the user-friendly interface, not in the engine of the system. As long as your site functions well, loads quickly, and is secure (which can be easily achieved with good hosting like that of my.host), you won’t notice a thing.

Downside 2: “The code is a mess”

The problem for developers: Many themes and plugins load styling (CSS) and scripts (JS) directly on the page. This is not the “clean” way and can technically slow down a page.

Why it doesn’t matter to you: With a good caching plugin (an absolute must-have for every WP site), this effect is minimized. The performance gain of a “perfectly clean” site is negligible for most business websites.

Downside 3: “The database is inefficient”

The problem for developers: WordPress throws almost all content (pages, blog posts, products, etc.) into the same digital “drawer” (wp_posts table). This is not the most organized database structure.

Why it doesn’t matter to you: This only becomes an issue for websites on a gigantic scale (think: a webshop with 50,000 products or a forum with millions of posts). For an SME site, portfolio, or blog, this is completely irrelevant.

Conclusion

WordPress is not the newest, flashiest tool on the market. It has technical imperfections that purists may stumble over.

But for the (relative) beginner looking for a professional, scalable, and affordable website where they have full control and ownership, WordPress in 2025 is still one of the smartest choices you can make.

The platform is proven, stable, and has an ecosystem so large that you’ll find a solution for every problem. And equally important: you are not dependent on one company that could decide to double the prices tomorrow.

TIP: Want to create your website with WordPress?
